Exhibition Catalogue
An expansive, full-color exhibition catalogue supporting Black Gold: Stories Untold will be available in January from Radius Books!
In reclaiming some of the fullness of California’s story, Black Gold hopes to do more than educate. It seeks to remind us that history is not simply what happened—it’s what gets remembered.
— Cheryl Haines | Director, FOR-SITE
Black Gold: Stories Untold
Published to coincide with FOR-SITE’s groundbreaking exhibition, this exhibition catalogue documents the extraordinary artworks on view at Fort Point, providing a platform for the exhibition’s creators and exploring the historical context and figures that inspired the show.
Featuring beautiful photography of the exhibition, the publication includes an essay by the exhibition’s curator, Cheryl Haines; two artist roundtable discussions moderated by Key Jo Lee and Luke Williams, respectively; new and archival materials celebrating California’s early Black leaders and addressing the state’s hidden history of anti-Black legislation, including an important essay by historian Albert S. Broussard; an historical timeline and biographies developed in consultation with Susan D. Anderson, History Curator and Program Manager, California African American Museum, Los Angeles; and texts detailing the contributions of each of the exhibition’s artists, including Adam Davis, Isaac Julien, Trina M. Robinson, Alison Saar, Yinka Shonibare CBE, and Hank Willis Thomas.
