  • *Watch with sound* Those foghorns echoing from outside of Pier 2 at @sfaiofficial’s @fortmasoncenter campus are an installation by sound artist Bill Fontana titled “Landscape Sculpture With Foghorns” — a work from 1981 in which the artist set out to create a live acoustic map of San Francisco Bay by dropping microphones at eight strategic spots along the waterfront to broadcast and record multiple acoustic delays from the Golden Gate Bridge foghorns. The work today is re-installed in the same location, but utilizes recordings from the original iteration.
__

Fontana refers to his work as sculptural because of the way that sound “…define[s] space and immerse[s] the viewer.” For FOR-SITE’s 2012 exhibition “International Orange,” Fontana created the sound sculpture “Acoustical Visions of the Golden Gate Bridge,” which featured sounds captured by sensors on various parts of the bridge and Fort Point, transmitted live to the exhibition space. By drawing attention to and isolating sounds that largely go unnoticed within our daily lives, Fontana creates unexpected avenues for exploring the spaces that surround us.

__ "Landscape Sculpture with Foghorns” is up through Spring 2019, but the ancillary exhibits at SFAI’s Gray Box and Main galleries are only open through April 22, so get out here soon!

  • Did you catch this weekend's @tmagazine article about fiber art as an unexpected political provocateur? We did! Thank you to @lesliecamhi for including "Sanctuary" in the article!

  • A few weeks ago, FOR-SITE was treated to a tour of the @presidiosf's exhibition "Exclusion" about the Presidio's role in the WWII Japanese American incarceration. Inviting visitors to "investigate the choices -- both personal and political -- that led to this dark chapter in American history," the exhibition provides an important lens through which to view current issues of immigration, racism, and mass incarceration. Definitely get yourself to this exhibition soon.
