For Sanctuary, Uman recasts a portion of her mural The Universe, which adorned the ceiling of a former studio space in New York City. The image is a colorful rendering of the Hubble Deep Field—a fractional photographic mapping of the constellation Ursa Major by the Hubble Space Telescope, compiled from more than three hundred individual exposures—whose infinitesimally narrow view of the universe nonetheless captures an astonishing number of nascent, distant galaxies. “One among the infinity of worlds looking outward at the others—each unique and all part of the same universal mosaic,” Uman writes of the Hubble perspective. “The universe—stretching to infinity, and now held in our minds.”
