Battery Boutelle
Completed in 1901, the three five-inch guns of Battery Boutelle could fire around 10 rounds per minute against mine sweepers and fast torpedo boats as distant as seven miles out to sea. The guns of the two-story battery were located on the top level, and ammunition was stacked in wooden boxes in the magazines below. Each complete cartridge, weighing 84 pounds, was carried up to the gun-loading platform by hand.
