Art About Place Archive: Issue 6
Please enjoy this excerpt from the documentary film Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly, which has been selected by over twenty international film festivals and has won several major awards. When the artist and activist Ai Weiwei was incarcerated for speaking out against the government’s suppression of information and free speech, it sent into motion what would become his monumental 2015 exhibition @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz.
The documentary film Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly tells the story of the profound effect Ai’s art had upon visitors, and what happened when they took action to write postcards of solidarity to existing prisoners of conscience.
Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian said of the film: “Absorbing…valuable…powerful…movingly puts Ai’s work into personal context.”

Art About Place Archive is a bi-weekly series that showcases the FOR-SITE Foundation exhibitions to date. In the spirit of joining together to share our common humanity, we hope these unique videos will help buoy your spirits and offer you creative reprieve during this time. While our exhibitions have historically been site-specific, art about place has always been intended to transcend location, to include virtual place, socio-economic, geographic and internal place. With this in mind, we share these beautiful stories to help foster an inspired and generative state regardless of where you are.
Our wish is that the storytelling here will serve to illuminate both our personal histories and our collective values. Please enjoy!
