Web Shop Highlight: Sanaz Mazinani
Sanaz Mazinani, Limited Edition Silk Scarf based on artist’s rug design for Sanctuary, FOR-SITE Foundation, 2017.
To create her kaleidoscopic photographic collages, Sanaz Mazinani draws from a large archive of media images that she digitally copies, crops, and mirrors, creating patterns out of isolated details. The resulting compositions are mounted to geometrically shaped boards, many of which evoke aircrafts or drones, unsettling the indexical sterility of war photography. Mazinani’s abstract patterns resemble Islamic design motifs, suggesting a mode of spiritual transfiguration. “The patterns allow the viewer to meditate and think about an elsewhere; they act as a point from which one can flourish,” she has said. “The idea here is to provide a position from which we could consider alternatives, and to imagine other paths and perspectives.
You can watch a great PBS video about Sanaz’ work here and learn more about her practice on her website.
Sanctuary was on view at Fort Mason Chapel, San Francisco, from October 7, 2017 through March 11, 2018.
