
Deborah Valoma
Deborah Valoma is an associate professor and chair of the Textiles Program at California College of the Arts, with a specialization in the cultural history of textiles as a global aesthetic practice. She edited a special issue of Textiles: Journal of Cloth and Culture on the topic of dust, and authored the award-winning book The Past in Present Tense: The Words and Work of Basket Maker Julia Parker. As a studio artist, Valoma explores the material, conceptual, and poetic nuances of the medium through a hybrid practice incorporating both digital weaving technologies and hand processes. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and museums including the de Young Museum, San Francisco; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Textile Museum, Washington, DC.
Valoma was an instructor in FOR-SITE’s education program in 2014.
