Overview + Topography
The FOR-SITE residency is nestled in 47 acres of dense forest, high peaks, granite domes and clear water in the Sierra Foothills, and is approximately 150 miles northeast of San Francisco. | Glidehouse + Workshop |
Glidehouse
Designed by Bay Area architect Michelle Kaufmann, the Glidehouse is an updated modular version of the Eichler with an open plan for living, dining and cooking. The prefab building process uses sustainable materials, creating a cost-effective, eco-friendly structure with clean modernist aesthetics. The studio has private views, and is equipped with a G4 Macintosh computer with internet access and printing capabilities. Workshop The FOR-SITE Workshop facility is a 1,600 sq. ft. mutable workshop, classroom and events space designed to meet a broad range of needs and functions. The building is a poured-in-place concrete bunker tucked into a sloping ridgeline, thereby minimizing its presence in the landscape and allowing the ridge crest to remain undisturbed. With large open areas for fabrication, as well as a separate catering kitchen and student storage/washroom/changing area, the building easily accommodates a wide range of activities and production needs. The workshop and the residency facility are designed to work in concert with each other and the landscape, providing a flexible, convenient and harmonious work/live environment for artists, students and educators. Located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, just below the snow line about 30 miles off Highway 80 near Auburn, and west of Lake Tahoe, Nevada City, dating back to the 1850s, is one of the most charming Gold Rush mining towns still in existence. As a testament of its love for its history, its beautiful Yuba River, its old gold mines, and its Victorian architecture, the entire town district is a National Historic Landmark. Autumn weather brings a stunning display of yellows and oranges across the hills, and in the winter, the mountain town becomes a blanket of white, living up to its name its name "Nevada," which in Spanish means "snow-covered."
The town is a diverse mix of the usual hippies, busted dot-commers, rednecks with flag decals on their trucks, right-wingers and artists. Despite having a population of fewer than 3,000 people, it is home to an extraordinary wealth of cultural attractions. There are book fairs, world famous bluegrass and storytelling festivals, year round theater performances by the Foothill Theatre Company, vineyards, and live music every weekend. Photos
