The Map and the View: working on and from the land
An exploration of how one responds to a particular place; how one speaks of that response and the place itself when no longer there; and the methods used to describe a place to those who will never see it.
Detail
This course takes these questions as its beginning point, questions which have pervaded both the creative production and critical thinking of artists, writers, and philosophers working with place, site, landscape, and nature.

Students took two trips to the FOR-SITE property in Nevada City to camp, study, experiment, and explore the site and create temporary works, performances, and writings that examined the site's ecology, landscape, and history. The class also spent time on-site with a variety of visiting artists and writers. These included FOR-SITE's fall 2009 artist-in-residence, Mark Dion who conducted one of his signature digs with the students, CCA visiting educator J. Morgan Puett, and artists Richard Walker, Loren Chasse, and Susanne Cockrell.
