This class studied the history of the Nevada City region and that of the FOR-SITE property, the history of earth art/land art as well as contemporary practices. Students worked with local experts to study local traditions and ecosystems, and explored ways to develop and incorporate sustainable practices into the creation of new work for the landscape and for gallery exhibition. Work that is impermanent, sustainable and experiential will be encouraged.
The class is generating a publication including research and documentation. Guest artists and lecturers included Hank Meals, Nevada City ecologist; Vaughn Bell, a Seattle-based multimedia artist; Dylan Bolles a composer and performance artist; Ted Purves and Susanne Cockrell, Bay Area artists working in social practice; writer Bill Fox; and Richard Walker, a video and performance artist. |
