Nathan Lynch, Chair and Advisor
Ceramics Department, California College of the Arts CERAM370, Spring 2008 This interdisciplinary, field-based course focused on earthworks, land use, and ecological interventions. Guest artist Ursula von Rydingsvard worked with the students in March. |
| Detail |
In addition to studying major earthworks from across the globe, the class visited local artisans, ecologists, and historians to learn from the specific history of the Nevada City landscape. The primary elements of ceramic processes (clay, water, fire) were the focus of material investigations. Work that is impermanent, sustainable, and experiential was encouraged.
The goal of the course was the development of a nuanced understanding of urban environments and rural landscapes. How do our expectations and assumptions about rural/urban spaces affect our treatment of that place and our behavior? |
