Turkeys in the snow at the FOR-SITE residency
About

Frequently Asked Questions

What is art about place?
We purposely keep the definition of “place” as broad and open-ended as possible. While we draw on the ideals of the American land art movement, we are interested in aesthetic explorations of all sorts of places — including virtual spaces — and all possible mediums.

Can I visit the artist residency site in Nevada City?
The residency site is not open to the general public. FOR-SITE supporters may be invited to private events at the land from time to time.

Can I apply for a FOR-SITE residency?
Artists are nominated by FOR-SITE’s institutional partners. The FOR-SITE Board reviews submitted proposals and awards approximately one residency per year. Individual artists must be nominated and may not apply directly to the foundation to be considered for the residency program.

How long is a residency?
Residencies last one to four months. There is only one artist at the residency at any given time.

Does the artwork have to be created at the residency?
Not necessarily. While FOR-SITE will always be interested in proposals that engage the Nevada City site, we also welcome off-site proposals that expand our ideas of place.

How does an exhibiting institution become a FOR-SITE partner?
FOR-SITE welcomes partnership queries from exhibiting institutions. Institutions interested in proposing a FOR-SITE project or having a previously exhibited FOR-SITE project presented at their venue should contact FOR-SITE at 415.362.9330 or info@for-site.org.

Does FOR-SITE offer consulting services for site-responsive projects?
FOR-SITE is available to provide consulting services for a wide range of arts and civic organizations.

How can I get more information?
Use our contact form, email your inquiries to info@for-site.org, or call us at 415.362.9330.
